Assessment Information

Assessment at Eastwood Village

Assessment lies at the heart of the process of promoting children’s learning. It provides a framework within which educational objectives may be set and children’s progress expressed and monitored. This should be done in partnership with the children as they have a shared ownership of their learning, and full understanding of their next steps in learning and how this is supported and enhanced.

Daily assessment is incorporated systematically into teaching strategies in order to diagnose any problems and chart progress in a wide variety of ways, for example through: pupils being clear about what and how they are learning, questioning, marking and verbal feedback.

Our Assessment System at Eastwood Village Primary School

Children are expected to be working within their Year Group Band, which has been broken into 3 main development points:

Once secure, you can then begin to ‘master’ the year group objectives. Where the child is expected to deepen their knowledge and understanding.

Key Stage 2 SATs

Key Stage 2 SATs: What Parents Need to Know

Picture1

At the end of Year 6, children will sit tests in:

  • Reading
  • Maths
  • Spelling, punctuation and grammar

These tests will be both written and marked externally, and the results will be used to measure Woden’s  performance compared to other schools. Your child’s marks will be used along with teacher assessments to give a picture of their attainment and progress.

Reading

The reading test will be a single paper with questions based on three texts.

Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling

This has two parts: a grammar and punctuation paper needing short answers and a spelling test of 20 words.

Maths

Maths consists of three papers:

Paper 1—will involve fixed response questions, where children will have to give the correct answer to calculations.

Papers 2 and 3—will involve questions linked to problem solving and reasoning.

When will the tests take place?

The Year 6 KS2 SATs will be administered from Tuesday 9th to Friday 12th May 2023

How will the SATs be marked?

The Government will give scaled scores to children. The score needed to reach National Standard is 100.

Multiplication Tables Check

Do you have a child in year 4 at primary school?

If so, they will be taking the statutory multiplication tables check (MTC) in June of this academic year.

The purpose of the check is to determine whether pupils can fluently recall their times tables up to 12, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will also help your child’s school to identify pupils who may need additional support.

What is the MTC?

The MTC is an on-screen check consisting of 25 times tables questions. Your child will answer 3 practice questions before moving on to the official check, and will then have 6 seconds to answer each question. On average, the check should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.

MTC has been extensively trialled and tested over its development. In March 2018, a trial took place with over 1000 pupils to establish an appropriate time limit for year 4 pupils to demonstrate fluent recall and give them the time to input their answers. During the national voluntary pilot in June 2019, just under 400,000 children successfully sat the check with a 6-second time limit.

Reception Baseline

Overview

The purpose of this assessment is to provide the starting point for a new measure that will help parents understand how well schools support pupils to progress between Reception and Year 6 the end of Key Stage 2.

The Reception Baseline Assessment is a short, interactive and practical assessment of your child’s early literacy, communication, language and mathematics skills when they begin school, using materials that most children of your child’s age will be familiar with. It became statutory for all schools to complete from September 2021.

The Reception Baseline Assessment will provide an opportunity for your child to have valuable one-to-one time with their teacher at an early stage so that the teacher can get to know your child better. It will provide a helpful snapshot of where your child is when they enter reception so that they can be supported in the most appropriate way.
